New Bachelor Contestant Fakes Australian Accent to "Stand Out," Draws Ire

bri barnish The Bachelor

The newest season of The Bachelor doesn't even premiere until Monday, but one of its contestants is already blowing up the Internet.

On Thursday, the show posted a promo clip in which contestant Bri Barnes has a meet-and-greet with this season's Bachelor, Colton Underwood. He smiles and says she has a nice accent and asks her where she's from, to which she responds, "Um, the accent it's Australian," which isn't technically a lie. At the very least, it's certainly an attempt at an Australian accent.

"I was hoping that you're kind of a sucker for accents," she tells him. "I didn't know what you'd think about it." Cut to her talking to the cameras in her normal, American accent and saying, "I'm not really Australian but you have to do what you can to stand out."

Is this lie going to take her down (under)? #TheBachelor

People were floored by this next-level scamming.

just watched a video of The Bachelor and this girl named Bri put on a FAKE Australian accent to "stand out" and I can't stop watching it and laughing

This is already must-see viewing.

A pretend Australian on American Bachelor. Fakes accent so she can "stand out". This is gold!

And you can fully expect this won't be the last time you'll be hearing about social media's newest champion.

There's a not insignificant chance this is all I tweet about for at least two weeks

Naturally, people want to know how she plans to pull this off. Like, is she banking on the prospect that Colton hasn't heard of the Internet?

I'm so curious as to whether she had a backstory prepped or if she's just going to wing it. And if she's just going to wing it, how robust is her existing knowledge of Australia.

'No prep' and 'highly misinformed about Australia' is absolutely my hope.

Of course, now everyone also wants to know everything about her.

I want to know absolutely everything there is to know about Bri, the Bachelor contestant who is pretending to be Australian

According to The Bachelor website, Bri is a 24-year-old model from Southern California who "played soccer for eight years, enjoys hiking and camping, and loves to hit the snowboard slopes."
