Tastykake Snack Cake Recalled Due to Health Concerns, FDA Warns

Who doesn't love a sweet treat once in a while? Some of us need one after dinner, while others just like to indulge when the occasional craving sets in. One mainstay brand we often turn to is Tastykake—a staple in convenience stores, supermarkets, and vending machines nationwide. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just issued a recall for one particular Tastykake product, citing health concerns. Read on to find out which snack cakes were pulled, and what you should do if you have them at home.

The recalled cakes were sold in six states.

In a May 24 recall notice, the FDA announced that Flowers Foods, Inc., the parent company for Tastykake, is voluntarily recalling certain Tastykake Chocolate Kandy Kakes.

Affected products were distributed on May 11 to customers in six states, namely Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, and West Virginia, the FDA said. Products have an "Enjoy By" date of June 5, 2023, which is listed on the side of the package. They also have the Universal Product Code (UPC) 0 25600 00225 4 printed beneath the barcode.

They were recalled due to an undeclared allergen.

Flowers Foods pulled the chocolate snack cakes after it was discovered that some packages of Tastykake Chocolate Kandy Kakes actually contained Tastykake Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes. As the name suggests, the latter contains peanuts, which are a known allergen.

"The ingredient statement for the Chocolate Kandy Kakes does not declare that peanuts are in the product," the recall notice reads. "No related illnesses or incidents have been reported to date."

You're entitled to a refund if you bought them.

Those with a peanut allergy or sensitivity shouldn't eat affected chocolate snack cakes, as they could suffer a "serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product," the FDA warned.

Instead, the agency asks that consumers throw away any affected snack cakes or return them to their place of purchase for a full refund. For specific questions about the recall, contact Flowers Foods' consumer relations center at 1-866-245-892 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). You can also email Flowers Foods directly through the company website.

Several other snacks were recently subject to recall.

Earlier this month, Lay's also issued a voluntary recall for a "limited number" of its Classic Potato Chips. Similar to the Tastykake snack cakes, the chips were pulled due to an undeclared allergen.

According to the FDA, a consumer complaint prompted the recall, and following an investigation, Frito-Lay determined that the classic chips may contain undeclared milk ingredients from the brand's sour cream and onion chips. People with milk allergies or sensitivities were instructed not to eat the chips and to throw them away immediately.

In addition, the FDA just issued recalls for other sweet snacks, including Van Leeuwen ice cream. According to a notice from May 23, the company voluntarily pulled 4,096 pints of "Brown Sugar Chunk" ice cream, as they contained undeclared walnuts.

The issue was again brought to Van Leeuwen's attention by a consumer, and an investigation revealed that the ice cream contained walnuts that were not listed on the packaging. Van Leeuwen is currently investigating the cause of the labeling error, the FDA said. Customers were instructed to return recalled ice cream to their place of purchase for a full refund.
